Lucky Discoveries for the Automotive Industries
Lithium-ion batteries power everything from mobile devices to jumbo airliners, including plug-in electric cars. There is a component in these batteries that, if overcharged, can catch fire and cause the batteries to spontaneously combust. This happened recently in the Tesla Model S, and is a limiting factor in the progress of the hybrid industry. Which is why we’re so excited to learn of the recent discovery of a potential replacement for this flammable component, that could lead to innovations in the hybrid industry.
How might this affect you? The lithium-ion batteries used in electric cars have short charges, limiting the distance you can drive on one charge. Innovations in the batteries that power these vehicles can help to extend the life of the charge, and make hybrid vehicles a possibility for even those who drive long distances daily (not to mention the benefit of a battery that won’t spontaneously combust!).
